We are two days out and Nathan has had a rough recovery from surgery. Everything they’ve said “normally” happens after surgery has happened slower than usual or we are still waiting for it to happen.
He’s still on oxygen flow. His saturation hovers around 90% (he was generally at 100% pre surgery) but dips a lot, and his heart rate varies a lot depending on if he’s mad or forgets to breathe.
He’s still not eating because as of yesterday morning he was not absorbing his food. In fact, he was very distended and seemed uncomfortable from that too.
It’s a tightrope walk between adequately managing his pain and not over medicating him so that he will keep breathing on his own.
Last night when we arrived to relieve my dad we came in to a whole team of people working to get him breathing again. That happened again early this morning.
He’s easily agitated when the pain meds wear off. Last night and today the nurses have been way more on top of them after learning how extremely sensitive he is from the night prior. This has been a huge blessing for all of us.
I wish I had a cute picture to post but he’s just not feeling up to it. 🙁
