Another sMiles4Sammy 5K (Kids 1K) Race for Nathan’s Birthday, Come Join Us!

Truly, this race has been a lot of fun for our family– for Nathan’s first birthday and his second birthday. sMiles4Sammy has been a huge support to us in the beginning of Nathan’s diagnosis. You can read our Family Story here which explains how we got connected to them. This year their annual fundraiser is a 5K on May 28th which so happens to be three days before Nathan’s birthday at the high school just down the road from us.

So I’m training for my run…ah…I’m mean my…run/walk combo.

My husband told me that I needed to take Jeff Galloway’s advice and start by running a minute, walking a minute, running a minute, and so on. Apparently it’s a thing. Run Walk Run. This does not fit my personality well. Or my pride. Walking a minute feels like defeat. If I’m going to run then I want to keep going and meet my goal on the first try. Except, that I can’t.

But thanks to the C25K app and some good 80s music, I’m trying this thing. A minute on, a minute off. It’s working. I know this because now I’m running longer in between my minute walks. In fact, during the end of my first I started to realize that not only could I run longer but I actually wanted to keep going. The second time out went even better.

It’s an exercise in discipline to take it slow. To pace myself and build up endurance. To not take on more than my body is capable of doing. So that eventually on May 28th I’ll be able to run the whole 5K, or at least cross the finish line somehow.

Of course there are so many parallels in my training for a 5K to parenting Nathan. I can’t see the finish line and I often get disoriented. I get tired at unexpected miles. There are hills around corners and I don’t know they are coming. Sometimes I need a handful of friends cheering me on from the sidelines. I’m in it now though. This is my race. I have to find a way to keep going even when it’s hard and I’m tired and I don’t see the point of his problems and pain. So training, I’m reminded, is just as important as the race itself. With parenting Nathan I need to train in such a way that I don’t burn out too soon. That I find our stride with therapy, routines, and medical interventions. That I respect how much I push him and what he’s capable of. And whether we walk, run, crawl, or creep along we’re still in the race marked out for us. And one day we will finish well.

Please come join us again this year friends. We would love it if you would run the race along with us, but even if you’re also not a runner please come out and say “hi” and cheer for us.

Also, you can simply register your kids for the 1K Ranger Trek race around the track. Mac loves this run and it’s fun to cheer all the kids on!

Run, jog, walk or stroll at the 4th Annual sMiles 4 Sammy Family Fun Run & 5K on Saturday, May 28th! Funds raised at this year’s 5K will be used to support families of medically fragile children through our sMiles 4 Families program, to provide scholarships for special needs families to attend family summer camp at Joni & Friends’ Camp Allen in Texas, and to support various other programs in our community that help families of medically fragile children.

This race is held annually in memory of Samantha Scott.  She lived for 10 months with trisomy 18, a condition considered incompatible with life.  Sammy defied the odds every step of the way and taught everyone around her that each day is a gift and that you don’t have to be old or famous to make a difference.

Every day is a Gift!
